The Reddit forum r/opensource has banned all posts about projects that use AI, were built with AI, or are designed for AI. Open source means a piece of software's source code is public, and depending on the license, anyone can use, modify, and share it. Developers use the forum to showcase their projects and get feedback.
The moderators published the new rules on Saturday evening, writing that AI in its current form doesn't fit the open-source community. Beyond the AI ban, projects must also be at least a year old, actively maintained, and have multiple contributors. Posts from people who don't speak English will no longer be accepted either, since the moderators say they can't tell whether a text was written by AI or just translated.
Critics call the rules too broad and too vague, pointing out that even the Linux kernel now contains AI-generated code. Moderator Wolvereness named some exceptions, like auto-generated subtitles. In response, the rival forum r/TrueOpenSource popped up, which doesn't exclude AI, The Verge reports.
